Spurs “definitely” have interest in Anthony Gordon

Tottenham Hotspur are keen on signing Anthony Gordon, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke…

What’s the word?

The north London outfit have been linked with interest in the young Everton winger, who is thought to be commanding a hefty price tag in the region of £60m, with Premier League rivals Chelsea also keen on his signature.

In an interview with Football FanCast, O’Rourke confirmed Spurs’ interest in the 21-year-old. He said:

“He’s definitely a player that Spurs like and in an ideal world, they would be in there trying to sign him.”

Should Spurs launch a move for Gordon?

Gordon is certainly a talent for the future and his potential arrival at Hotspur Way could help the Lilywhites resolve some of their homegrown problems – an issue that is set to get worse should the likes of Harry Winks and Japhet Tanganga leave before deadline day.

However, £60m is an awful lot to pay for someone that has only scored four goals and laid on eight assists across 63 appearances, in which seven goal contributions have come in 52 top-flight matches, as per Transfermarkt.

He is a nuisance in the final third though, having been dubbed “fearless” by former Premier League talisman Alan Shearer.

When compared to other wingers across Europe’s elite divisions, the young Toffees dynamo ranks inside the top 1% for blocks (2.15) per 90, the top 4% for tackles (2.4) per 90 and the top 6% for pressures (23.09) per 90, as per FBref, so a lot of his off-the-ball work can go unnoticed.

Under Conte, it isn’t just about providing chances and scoring goals – after all, you’ve got Harry Kane and Heung-min Son to do that. But this sort of intense work rate will certainly have caught the Italian’s eye and at the same time, he’s a homegrown talent too.

Whilst it remains to be seen whether Spurs will make their move before the end of the summer transfer window next week, it’s clear that Gordon – despite not being so goal-heavy – would be a neat fit for the north London outfit but they would need to pay the premium on the young English gem if they are to sign him in the coming days.
