Spurs now eyeing “luxury” seventh signing

Tottenham Hotspur are looking to end the summer transfer window with a bang…

What’s the word?

According to transfer insider Dean Jones, who has been speaking to This is Futbol this week, Spurs are now eyeing up a ‘luxury signing’ to bolster Antonio Conte’s squad in what would be a seventh arrival of the window.

“It’s luxury signings that they’re now looking at,” he claimed.

“Having £60m for a luxury signing is a lot of money, and is going to be somebody that’s going to expect to be part of your side, week in, week out.”

Spurs eye summer-ending coup

Indeed, there have been six new additions through the door at Hotspur Way, the most notable of which have been a £60m splash on Richarlison, who isn’t even guaranteed a starting spot, £25m on Yves Bissouma, and the free transfer of Ivan Perisic.

Conte will surely be delighted with the business that they have conducted so far, as will the Lilywhites’ fanbase, but there are still a couple of holes to be plugged.

One remaining area of concern is a creative midfielder, which is something lacking from the current squad, though Jones’ suggestion that they are now looking for a luxury signing could hint toward this role being filled.

The likes of Leicester City playmaker James Maddison and AS Roma star Nicolo Zaniolo have been linked with moves to north London and either would certainly fall under that bracket of signing.

Maddison, who delivered a whopping 18 goals and 12 assists across all competitions last season, is a proven Premier League talent and one that would bolster Spurs’ homegrown quota.

The Foxes star also ranked within the top 5% of midfielders in the Premier League for goal-creating actions (0.70 per 90) and also the top 12% for passes into the final third (2.89 per 90), as per FBref.

Meanwhile, Zaniolo – dubbed “explosive” by Roma legend Francesco Totti – was similarly a big threat in the final third during the 2021/22 campaign, managing eight goals and nine assists under former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho.

A truly wasted talent...

The Italy international has been likened to Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard, two players renowned for their ability to arrive late and contribute with a goal or assist, so he could be an instant hit in England.

Either way, the fact that Jones believes that Tottenham are looking for a ‘luxury’ signing for around £60m is surely enough for supporters around N17 to be absolutely thrilled.

There’s less than a week to go until the start of the new season and a month left remaining in the transfer window. There is more excitement ahead for the north Londoners.
