Tottenham Hotspur's new manager Antonio Conte has a mighty task on his hands, so he will certainly need to be well-backed in the upcoming January transfer window.

One mooted transfer target could solve one of his biggest issues.

In late October, the Premier League side were linked with a move for Bayer Leverkusen sensation Florian Wirtz, as per German outlet Sport Bild. The 18-year-old could be the man that Conte needs.

Spurs are amongst the worst teams in the Premier League in the final third - a lack of shots on goal, a striking void of any sort of creativity and a wantaway striker are some of the many factors affecting their frontline right now.

Indeed, the north London outfit are tied bottom alongside basement boys Norwich City, who have picked up two points all season, for average shots per game (10.3). An expected goals ratio of 10.63 xG sees them sit fourth from bottom, slightly ahead of the winless Canaries and fellow relegation candidates Newcastle United and Watford.

Somehow Spurs still find themselves inside the top ten, though they possess the joint-worst goal difference (-7) of any team outside of the drop zone.

As you can see, Conte has a lot of work to do to turn around this sinking ship, and a good place to start would be in attacking midfield, where he desperately needs to find a solution to their creative woes.

You could argue that the club have failed to sufficiently replace Christian Eriksen, who departed back in January 2020. The Dane delivered a goal or assist every 151.6 minutes during his time in north London.

These are levels to which none of Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso or Dele Alli can even get close, which is perhaps why Tottenham have struggled so much up top.

For example, they have relied heavily on Harry Kane, who scored or assisted 54.5% of all their league goals last season, and Heung-min Son to help provide for each other and themselves. The former has certainly been out of sorts since a failed move to Man City in the summer, too.

Wirtz has been in electric form since his breakthrough at the BayArena - he has provided six goals and six appearances across 12 appearances so far this campaign, adding to a total of eight goals and eight assists last season, via Transfermarkt.

He is contributing a goal or assist every 65.8 minutes in 2021/22. That's an even better rate than Eriksen, albeit in a much shorter time frame, but it highlights why he could be a rather astounding solution.

In one game for his country, Wirtz created four key chances in just half an hour, having come on as a substitute against Armenia. ESPN lauded his passing ability and that only bolsters his credentials to become a real playmaking beast in Conte's midfield.

The teenage wonderkid has been dubbed a "special player" by teammate Julian Baumgartlinger and an "elite talent" by scout Jacek Kulig in the past, but perhaps his German U21 coach Stefan Kuntz has given the most glowing endorsement.

"Florian is one of the most impressive talents in Germany," he claimed after his debut at that level.

On the above evidence, Spurs chief Fabio Paratici must look to deliver Wirtz, as he's exactly what Conte will need to transform their fortunes on the pitch, at least in the attack, where they have struggled the most.

Valued at £58.5m by Transfermarkt, the Leverkusen beast would be a costly but worthwhile investment. Spurs must look to seal his signature at all costs in January.
