Harry Kane yet to discuss new Spurs contract

Harry Kane is yet to open talks with Tottenham Hotspur over a new contract, contrary to reports…

What’s the word?

On Christmas Day, The Athletic reported that Spurs are expected to offer the 28-year-old striker a fresh extension should things go to plan under Antonio Conte, which is something that Darren Bent has since added further fuel to the fire about.

Speaking on talkSPORT Drive, he said: “I heard – and I have to stress it was a rumour – but it’s that he’s potentially gonna stay and sign a new contract there.”

However, according to football.london reporter Alasdair Gold, this isn’t the case.

Should Spurs offer Kane a new deal?

YES!

YES!

NO!

NO!

He wrote in a recent column:

‘Both those within Kane’s camp and those within Tottenham maintain that talks have not yet begun over a new contract for the striker – with what happens at the club in the coming transfer windows set to truly show just how far that ambition will stretch.

Kane still has two and a half years left on that six-year deal he penned back in 2018 and right now goals is the best currency the forward has at his disposal.’

Conte fuming

After a long summer of transfer speculation and controversy, the last thing the Lilywhites faithful need is a saga over a new deal but this is what could now emerge.

When Spurs tried to tempt Conte into replacing Jose Mourinho in the summer, he wanted reassurances that Kane would remain at the club. Clearly, since then, Nuno Santo has been and gone, and the England talisman is still playing for them.

It’s no secret that he is a huge admirer of his frontman. “I always say we are talking about a top-class striker and a player that for us is very important,” Conte told the BBC on Sunday (via football.london).

Meanwhile, back in 2017, the Italian said: “For me, Kane, now is one of the best strikers in the world. If I had to buy one striker I would go to Kane. He is a complete striker.”

A truly wasted talent...

On that basis alone, you’d imagine that he would like to tie the 28-year-old to new terms in a bid to keep him and not get sidetracked by another saga like the one in the summer.

Man City could quite easily come calling again, seeing as they did not sign another striker after missing out on Kane.

Of course, Kane’s form in the Premier League has been nothing short of disappointing, having found the net only four times in 16 appearances, but under Conte, he’s got a new lease on life and one that could eventually bring him the silverware both he, and the club, desperately crave.

The fact that the Spurs hierarchy have not opened discussions over an extension or pay rise to his current £200k-per-week contract will certainly be cause for concern heading into another transfer window.
