Spurs enter Youri Tielemans transfer tussle

Tottenham Hotspur are the latest team to be linked with a move for Youri Tielemans ahead of the summer transfer window…

What’s the word?

According to Italian outlet Calciomercato, Spurs are battling Premier League rivals Liverpool and Manchester United, as well as Serie A giants Juventus to his signature.

Just last month, the Telegraph reported that Leicester City would be open to selling the Belgium international for around £25m and that’s somewhat under his true value, with CIES estimating that to be in the region of €50m (£42m), due to his contractual situation.

He’ll be entering the final year of his current £120k-per-week deal this off-season, so it could be the final chance for the Foxes to cash in.

Should Spurs pay £25m for Tielemans?

Perfect for Conte

As many around Spurs will now, Tielemans has been a standout star for the Midlands outfit in the Premier League, helping them to their first-ever FA Cup trophy when he bagged the game’s only goal against Champions of Europe, Chelsea, last season.

Once described as an “outrageous talent” by scout Jacek Kulig, the 24-year-old star is capable of adding goals and creativity from a deeper midfield role.

Last season, he provided nine goals and six assists, and has since built on that with ten direct goal contributions across all competitions this season, via Transfermarkt.

It’s no wonder The Athletic’s Rob Tanner credits the Belgian dynamo as being Brenden Rodgers’ “creator” despite having the likes of James Maddison in the side, and it’s all the more impressive considering he operates from a much deeper position than the no.10.

Such an ability has earned comparisons to former Chelsea legend Frank Lampard, and it’s that sort of player that manager Antonio Conte would surely love at his disposal.

“He is a phenomenon. There are not many players better than him,” once claimed former Anderlecht and Sweden midfielder Par Zetterberg (via Sky Sports).

Can you guess these ex-players? First up... A history-maker at Spurs but scored just one goal in ten appearances, who is he?

Indeed, he currently rates out to be Rodgers’ best player statistically this campaign, averaging a squad-high WhoScored rating of 6.96. He has also averaged 2.3 tackles and 1.4 clearances per game, showing a defensive side to his game too.

This bustling energy and work rate at both ends of the pitch is surely right up the Italian’s street. He may well have Rodrigo Bentancur, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp but none possess the goalscoring and creating ability of the Foxes sensation.

For just £25m, Spurs could seal quite the bargain in Tielemans.
