Spurs: Alasdair Gold drops Alessandro Bastoni transfer update

Alasdair Gold has dropped an update on reported Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Alessandro Bastoni.

What’s the talk?

Transfer Focus

In a recent video posted on his YouTube channel, the football.london journalist revealed that, following a number of reports linking Tottenham with a move for the Inter Milan centre-back this summer, Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici are indeed interested in a deal for the 23-year-old defender.

Regarding Spurs’ interest in the Italy international, Gold said: “We know they also want a left-sided centre-back, I know that Conte and Paratici adore Alessandro Bastoni from Inter Milan. He’s 23, he fits on the left side of a back three very nicely, he’d be very similar to [Cristian] Romero on the right and he’d provide great competition for Ben Davies in that role.

“Big money though, I think. He’s only got two years left on his deal but there’s talk that it would be north of £50m for him, but that’s a top, top-class player. That is someone again who ticks the box for Tottenham in being 23 and young, ticks the box of being very much ready for Conte who has worked with him already – he would be class.

“For me, I’d put my money there over [signing a new] striker. If you were going to spend the big money, I’d put it on the left-sided centre-back with Bastoni because I think he would be huge. That’s one of those places in the squad where they don’t have two of.”

Romero 2.0

Considering just how exciting a prospect Bastoni evidently is, in addition to the fact that Conte already has a relationship with the defender, it is easy to see why Spurs would be interested in a move for the 23-year-old this summer.

Do you think Bastoni would be a good signing for £50m?

Yes

No

No

Indeed, over his 31 Serie A appearances this season, the £60m-rated talent was in fantastic form on the left of Inter’s back three, helping his side keep eight clean sheets, scoring one goal, registering three assists and creating four big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of 50.5 passes, 1.1 interceptions, 1.4 tackles, 1.8 clearances and winning 4.1 duels – at a success rate of 60% – per game.

These returns saw the £122k-per-week left-footed defender average a highly impressive SofaScore match rating of 7.10, ranking him as Simone Inzaghi’s eighth-best performer in the top flight of Italian football.

Furthermore, according to FBref data, Bastoni also ranks in the top 15% of centre-backs in Europe’s big five leagues for pressures per 90, in addition to the top 14% for passes attempted, the top 25% for passes completed, the top 14% for progressive passes, the top 11% for progressive carries, the top 22% for dribbles completed and the top 3% for shot-creating actions over the last 365 days.

A truly wasted talent...

As such, considering his age, ball-playing ability and the fact he is based in Italy, it would indeed appear as if the signing of Bastoni would be an extremely similar one to that of Romero, leading us to believe that Paratici must do everything possible to convince the Italian of a move to north London this summer – as the 23-year-old could very much be the final piece of Conte’s back-three puzzle at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
