Tottenham Hotspur are interested in a deal to bring Cody Gakpo to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer transfer window.
That’s according to a report by The Mirror (via The Daily Express), who claim that Antonio Conte has informed Fabio Paratici that the PSV Eindhoven winger is a player he would like to add to his current attacking arsenal ahead of Spurs’ 2022/23 campaign.
The report goes on to state that the Dutch side are thought to be demanding around £35m in order to part with the 22-year-old this summer, while both Arsenal and Bayern Munich are also credited with an interest in the Netherlands international.
Considering just how impressive Gakpo has been for PSV this season, in addition to the fact that, since his £27m move to Tottenham back in January 2020, Steven Bergwijn has failed to live up to initial expectations, it is easy to see why Conte is targeting a move for the Dutch starlet this summer.
Indeed, over his 20 Eredivisie appearances in the current campaign, the £22.5m-rated sensation has been in electric form for Roger Schmidt’s side, bagging eight goals, registering 13 assists and creating ten big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of three shots and making three key passes per game.
These returns have seen the £7.4k-per-week forward average a quite breathtaking SofaScore match rating of 7.58, not only ranking him as his club’s best performer in the league but also as the fourth-best player in the division as a whole.
However, it has not only been in the Eredivisie in which Gakpo has impressed, with the 22-year-old scoring a further eight goals and providing two more assists over his 17 fixtures in Champions League qualification, the Europa League, the Europa Conference League, the KNVB Beker and the Johan Cruijff Schaal – taking his total haul for the season to a quite remarkable 16 goals and 15 assists over 37 appearances in all competitions.
In comparison, over Bergwijn’s 18 Premier League outings this season, the £16.2m-rated winger has been rather less impressive, scoring just two goals, registering one assist and creating one big chance for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of a mere 0.9 shots and making 0.4 key passes per fixture.
These metrics have seen the £73k-per-week man – who Graeme Souness dubbed, along with a number of his Spurs teammates, “disinterested” after a 1-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion last season – average an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.75, ranking him as Conte’s seventh-worst player in the top flight of English football.
As such, it is perhaps no surprise that Bergwijn has been heavily linked with a move away from north London this summer, nor will it come as a shock that Conte is eyeing Gakpo as the 24-year-old’s replacement.
Indeed, the PSV starlet who Theo Janssen claimed “has everything” would very much look to be a huge upgrade on his compatriot – leading us to believe that Paratici simply must do all he can to land the winger for Conte ahead of 2022/23.
