Dan Kilpatrick has dropped an update on the future of Tottenham Hotspur right-back Emerson Royal.

What's the latest?

Transfer Focus

In a recent post on Twitter, the Evening Standard journalist revealed that, following Spurs' impending £12.5m signing of right wing-back Djed Spence, either Matt Doherty or the 23-year-old Brazil international looks likely to leave north London in the summer transfer window.

However, Kilpatrick went on to reveal that, speaking in a press conference on the club's tour of South Korea, the Irishman has already stated his desire to remain at Tottenham heading into 2022/23, while the former Barcelona defender has been heavily linked with a move away this summer.

In his tweet, the journalist said: "Spence arrival will leave Conte with 6 wing-backs. Reguilon is transfer listed & you'd think one of Doherty or Emerson is now likely to leave too. Doherty told reporters in Seoul this week he wants to stay, while Emerson has been linked with a return to Spain."

Supporters will be buzzing

With Kilpatrick appearing to suggest that Emerson looks the more likely of the right-back duo to be offloaded this summer, considering just how underwhelming the €30m (£25.7m) signing was throughout his debut campaign at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the journalist's update is sure to have left Spurs supporters buzzing.

Indeed, over his 31 Premier League appearances last term, the £34m-rated full-back offered extremely little going forwards, scoring one goal, providing one assist and creating one big chance for his team-mates, in addition to missing two big chances of his own.

The £62k-per-week Brazilian did return slightly better numbers at the back, helping his team to keep five clean sheets, along with making 0.7 interceptions, 2.3 tackles and 2.5 clearances and winning 5.4 duels (at a success rate of 55%) per game.

However, his overall returns saw the 23-year-old end the season with a disappointing average SofaScore match rating of 6.88, ranking him as Antonio Conte's joint 10th-worst player in the league last time out.

As such, should Fabio Paratici manage to get anywhere near his reported €25m (£22m) asking price for Emerson this summer, it would certainly represent a fantastic deal for the Italian sporting director, as it is clear to see that the defender is simply not suited to Conte's requirements at wing-back.
