Spurs: Dharmesh Sheth drops Japhet Tanganga update

Dharmesh Sheth has dropped an update on the future of Tottenham Hotspur centre-back Japhet Tanganga.

What’s the latest?

In a recent post on Twitter, the Sky Sports reporter revealed that, following a number of reports linking the defender with a €20m (£16.8m) move to AC Milan this summer, the Serie A side are now set to resume talks with Fabio Paratici regarding a deal for the 23-year-old.

The journalist went on to state that Tottenham would prefer the departure of the former England U21 international to be on a permanent basis, while Tanganga himself is thought to be extremely keen on a move to the San Siro ahead of the 2022/23 campaign.

In his tweet, Sheth said: “AC Milan expected to resume talks with Tottenham over the signing of defender Japhet Tanganga. It is thought Tottenham favour a permanent deal. Player wants to make the move.”

Supporters will love Sheth’s update

While it is undeniable that Tanganga is a very talented young defender, considering it has been reported that, in order for Antonio Conte to bring in more of his own defensive reinforcements this summer, Tottenham will first have to sell a number of the current options at the back, Sheth’s update regarding the future of the 23-year-old is sure to be news the Spurs faithful will love.

Indeed, following the 52-year-old’s appointment as Nuno Espirito Santo’s successor in the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium dugout last November, it became apparent that the £10.8m-rated defender was not a crucial part of the Italian’s first team plans – starting just nine games under the management of the former Inter Milan boss, as well as making a further two appearances from the bench.

And, while it is true that a knee injury kept the £25k-per-week talent sidelined for a number of weeks towards the end of the 2021/22 campaign, the argument that Conte could sign a much more suitable player to his style of football following the sale of Tanganga this summer is a relatively easy one to make.

Indeed, Paratici has recently been linked with a move for the likes of Pau Torres, Nikola Milenkovic and Marc Guehi, all three of whom would appear to be a better fit for the ball-playing role the Italian coach prefers his centre-backs to fulfil.

How well do you know Spurs manager Antonio Conte? Question 1. During his playing days, in which position did Conte typically operate?

As such, while waving goodbye to a homegrown talent in Tanganga may mark a sad day for a number of the Spurs support, it is clear to see that the 23-year-old’s departure could well lead to the Tottenham backline being a much stronger unit next season – an outcome that everyone involved with the club would be delighted with.
