Chelsea have very few areas of weakness to address this summer, which sort of comes with the territory of being champions… if you ignore the debacle that was 2015/16 at Stamford Bridge, that is.
As such, this off-season should be about adding a sprinkling of stardust to Antonio Conte’s team with two or three choice additions, if you discount loanees returning – some of which (Andreas Christensen) are likely to feature. And stardust come much more sparkly than Alexis Sanchez, who is, according to The Guardian, the west Londoners’ No.1 target as his Arsenal future hangs in the balance.
With just over 12 months to run on his Gunners contract, the Emirates Stadium side know that they will have to sell in a few months’ time if he will not put pen to paper, and the Mirror have revealed that bids of £50m might well be accepted, and while that’s a lot of cash for a potential 2018 freebie, the Chilean has been excellent.
The headline-grabbing stats surround Sanchez’ 18 goals and nine assists, but his chance creation is hugely impressive at 65 in 27 games, while 72 take-ons works out as close to three-a-game. Interestingly, eleven interceptions is by no means poor for an attacking player, hinting that he could function in an all-action front three alongside Eden Hazard and Diego Costa, which would be the most fearsome in English football and up there with Real Madrid and Barcelona’s offerings!
£50m for a club Chelsea’s size… it makes sense, doesn’t it?
