Rumours of Everton swooping for Gylfi Sigurdsson this summer are nothing new, but the latest update from Bleacher Report's Dean Jones claims the Toffees now face two obstacles - firstly, the fact Leicester City are now a factor in the race for the 50-cap Iceland international's signature and secondly, that Swansea are pricing him at a whopping £40million.

Everton have already set a new club-record transfer fee this summer and would have to do so again to meet the Welsh outfit's valuation - it's claimed the Merseysiders were hoping to pay £10million less to obtain the 27-year-old's services.

Having narrowly avoided relegation last season, that might seem like a pretty steep price - Transfermakt value Sigurdsson at just £21.25million.

But in the context of the current transfer market, £40million for a player with such a proven track record in the Premier League, who enjoyed such phenomenal form last season he kept the Swans up almost single-handed, is probably a fair enough estimate.

At the same time, Ross Barkley is expected to leave this summer, having not renewed his contract which expires at the end of next season, and Everton need a replacement they know will hit the ground running if they plan on pushing for a spot in the top four.

It's rather incredible to think Chelsea paid less for Eden Hazard just five years ago, but these are new, bizarre times we now live in where transfer fees have exploded beyond the realms of normality.

All in all, Everton could do a lot worse this summer than spending £40million on a well-established Premier League attacker enjoying his peak years.
