According to the Birmingham Mail, Aston Villa are keen on signing 'keeper Joe Lewis from Aberdeen this January.

What's the Story?

Aston Villa's Chief Scout Tony Coton was reported to be in Scotland last weekend keeping tabs on Aberdeen goalkeeper Joe Lewis, who kept his third successive clean sheet in a 1-0 victory over Hibernian.

Despite Sam Johnstone's fantastic start to the season, Villa are thought to be interested in strengthening their goalkeeping ranks and Lewis is considered to be on their top targets.

How good has Lewis been this season?

In short, very. Once again, Aberdeen seem to be Celtic's only legitimate threat for this years Scottish title. Lewis has been a key player in the Dons unbeaten start to the season.

A calm presence between the sticks, the Englishman offers Aberdeen something that they haven't had for a while in the goalkeeping ranks, a calming presence.

Due to his importance for the club, it seems unlikely that Aberdeen would let Lewis go on the cheap, despite Transfermarket valuing the 30-year-old at just £400,000.

Would Lewis be a good signing for Aston Villa?

While it may be hard for Lewis to dislodge Sam Johnstone from the number one spot at Villa Park, he would certainly provide the young keeper some stern competition plus some sound advice.

Lewis has a wealth of experience in England's second tier. Spells at Peterborough, Cardiff, Blackpool and Rotherham would stand Lewis in good stead, as he wouldn't need to adjust to the ferocity of the Championship.
