Manchester United’s name has been heavily linked with Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann ahead of the summer transfer window and the Spanish giants may have dropped an indication that they’re resigned to losing their star-man.
The Telegraph reports Atletico are eyeing a summer swoop for Lyon hitman Alexandre Lacazette, as they seek to bring the French striker to the Vicente Calderon ahead of a possible sale of Griezmann- which would lead to a likely move to the Premier League.
Losing Griezmann would be a big blow to Atletico but Lacazette would be a ready-made replacement and he’s certainly ready for bigger tests, having excelled with a Lyon side that has struggled to compete with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Monaco and OGC Nice this season.
Atletico Madrid are aware that they are likely to lose Griezmann in the long-term but they are determined for the Frenchman to stay until 2018, when manager Diego Simeone is also likely to leave. Whilst Manchester United have been made aware of Atletico’s hopes, the Spanish side are powerless to stop him leaving if the Red Devils match his £85m release-clause.
The links to Lacazette are not the final nail in the coffin though for Griezmann at Atletico as there is still the outside chance that Griezmann could stay to feature alongside his compatriot- as the former Real Sociedad man has previously stated his desire for his countryman to join him in the Spanish capital.
Lyon are preparing to sell Lacazette this summer, with their likely to be a wealth of Premier League interest, but the French side want around £60m for his services and chairman Jean-Michel Aulas is renowned for being difficult to negotiate with.
