According to The Mirror, Celtic are in discussions with Queen's Park Rangers over the signing of former England defender Steven Caulker.

What's the Story?

In a bid to ensure their firm grip on the title and establish themselves as a European force once more, Celtic are reportedly looking to strengthen their squad by signing Steven Caulker from Queen's Park Rangers.

The defender, who is valued at £4.25million by Transfermarkt, has been with six clubs since 2012 and will be looking for a permanent move where he can settle.

It is being reported that Caulker and Brendan Rodgers are now in discussions regarding amove, which would see the pair reunited for the first time since both were at Swansea.

How good was Caulker last season?

Well documented personal troubles away from the football field saw Caulker feature sparingly for QPR last season. The 25-year-old played just 13 times for the Championship strugglers all season and has been left out of their pre-season tour, seemingly indicating his imminent departure.

In the games where did play, Caulker displayed half of the talent that made him such a sought after defender five years ago. However, the player himself has explained that he was not right mentally and has been working independently this summer to regain his fitness in mind and body.

Would Caulker be a good signing for Celtic?

The success of this signing is truly dependent on Caulker himself. If he has returned to full fitness and can put the troubles of the past behind him, he could quickly become one of the best, if not the best defender in Scotland.

However, if his past comes back to haunt him, it could be another unfortunate move for the one-time England international.
