Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic are adamant that goalkeeper Craig Gordon will not leave this window but the Scottish international wants to join Chelsea, according to The Daily Mail.
Chelsea are keen to find a replacement for Asmir Begovic before approving his sale to Bournemouth but their plans hit a bump in the road yesterday, with the Premier League leaders seeing a bid rejected by the Scottish champions.
Brendan Rodgers is keen not to lose 34-year-old Gordon, despite the international having just six months on his deal, but Chelsea are continuing to push- and the player himself is also keen to move to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea are assessing their options but could return, which sets up a potential domino effect across British football; as a Gordon sale would allow Begovic to join Bournemouth, whilst Celtic would probably look to sign a new goalkeeper themselves.
The former Hearts and Sunderland keeper is happy at Celtic Park but wants to the opportunity to speak to the Premier League leaders, as it would probably be his last chance at a big club. That said, Celtic are big themselves and he does have plenty of playing time.
It makes it a difficult decision for Gordon to make but a source close to the Scottish ace said he wants a answer from Celtic. Quoted by The Mail, the source said:
‘Craig feels he cannot allow the possibility of a move to Chelsea to pass without at least exploring it.’
Whether Celtic agree with that matter remains to be seen and the fact a move is coming so late in the window makes it difficult for Brendan Rodgers’ side.
