According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea could be set to lose out on yet another key transfer target, as Manchester City lead the race for Danilo.

What's the Story?

Romelu Lukaku, Leonardo Bonucci and Alvaro Morata all looked to have slipped out of Chelsea's grasp this season after events transpired against the Premier League Champions. Now, it looks as though another one of their key targets looked set to move elsewhere, as Manchester City have stepped up the chase for Real Madrid defender Danilo, according to reports.

Chelsea have supposedly refused to meet Madrid's £30.8million asking price for their 25-year-old Brazilian, a fee that Manchester City are reportedly happy to pay.

How good was Danilo last season?

Despite being the second choice right-back at Real Madrid last season, behind Dani Carvajal, Danilo impressed when called upon. His attacking prowess from the right flank was impressive and he also defended with equal capability.

The Brazilian featured 24 times in all competitions for the Spanish Champions last season but will likely want more first-team football, especially as the 2018 World Cup looms on the horizon.

The future of Danilo, who is valued at £13.6million by Transfermarkt, will depend on whether Dani Carvajal signs a new contract with Real Madrid, which looks more likely with each passing day.

Do Manchester City need Danilo?

While there is an enormous need for improvement in Manchester City's defence, a move for Danilo would seem strange considering the club have just spent the best part of £50million on luring Kyle Walker to the club.

And while the 27-year-old England international will require some competition for his position, a player like Danilo would likely want to be far more than a back-up.
