Chelsea have opened talks with Thibaut Courtois' camp regarding a new contract for the goalkeeper, reports The Telegraph.

What's the story?

The Belgium international has been touted as a potential target for Spanish club Real Madrid.

In order to fend off any potential interest from the European giants, Chelsea intend to offer Courtois a new deal.

The Telegraph claims that a meeting between club officials and the goalkeeper's representatives has taken place regarding negotiations over fresh terms.

It is believed that the Premier League champions will need to increase Courtois' weekly wage of £100,000 by at least £50,000 if they want their player not to be lured by the money on offer at the Bernabeu.

Are Chelsea in danger of losing their number one?

When Real Madrid come calling, it would be difficult to ignore their offer, but there is no concrete reports that the Spanish outfit have contacted Courtois.

The Belgian spent three years in Spain between 2011 and 2014 playing for Atletico Madrid on loan from Chelsea.

Since returning to Stamford Bridge, Courtois has been the Blues' number one and from the club's point of view they need to pull out all the stops to keep him.

Staying or leaving would be win-win for the player as he will be first choice at both clubs and have an opportunity to win major trophies.

For Chelsea, if they want to maintain their dominance in the Premier League they would need to find a fitting replacement, which could prove to be difficult.

The Telegraph reports that Real are leaning more towards Manchester United's David de Gea then Courtois, which suggests that the 25-year-old will stay at the Bridge.
