Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho has attempted to play down rumours linking him with a move to Barcelona, reports the Metro.

What's the word?

Despite signing a new long-term contract with the Merseyside outfit in January, the Brazilian continues to be named in the gossip pages over a potential switch to the Camp Nou.

Spanish journalist Guillem Balague has stated a handful of times to Sky Sports that Barcelona are not interested in signing Coutinho, but the speculation continues to swirl.

After scoring a free kick in the Reds' 3-0 win over Middlesbrough on the final day of the Premier League season, the playmaker addressed his future.

According to the Metro, Coutinho told ESPN Brasil:

"I have a long contract with Liverpool. Speculations are for journalists only."

Klopp needs to stand firm

It is unclear whether any clubs will table offers for Coutinho this summer, but his spells of scintillating form for Liverpool are likely to attract suitors.

When the likes of Barcelona or Real Madrid come calling, it is difficult for footballers - particularly those of Spanish or South American heritage - to turn them down.

Coutinho signalled his commitment to Liverpool by penning a long-term deal earlier this year, but we all know that contracts can be bought out.

It is imperative that manager Jurgen Klopp does not allow his playmaker's head to turn because Coutinho will be a vital part of the club's Champions League campaign next season.

The 24-year-old scored 13 top-flight goals and provided seven assists in 31 appearances to help the club secure a position in the top four.

Coutinho's style on the ball will suit playing against the free-flowing teams in Europe's elite competition, and if the club keep hold of their man while also adding more quality, they could make an impression next season.
