In Focus: Arsenal bid for Onyekuru justified by goalscoring form

Speaking to the Nigerian Football Federation, Henry Onyekuru has confirmed that Arsenal have made a bid to sign him this summer.

What’s the story?

Arsene Wenger will likely be on a big summer recruitment drive when the transfer window opens after committing to the club with a new contract, as he prepares to build a side that can finally challenge for the English Premier League title.

If they are to do that, they will need a natural goalscorer and it appears Wenger may be closing in on such a star.

As quoted in an audio interview with the Nigerian Football Federation, Onyekuru said:

I remember saying if I had to move to the Premier League I want to be like Thierry Henry, so it’s like a dream come true and I’m looking towards it at the moment. It’s a good feeling for a club like Arsenal come to make an offer for me, this is due to my hard work in training and games. It’s a good feeling. I am waiting and working towards it and we’ll see how it goes after the [Nigeria] qualifiers.

If a deal can be agreed then the Gunners are certainly getting a striker in peak form, ready to bang in the goals in the English Premier League.

Red hot

Onyekuru has scored a massive 23 goals for Belgian side Eupen this season but it’s his form in recent matches that has really caught the eye. In his last 10 matches for the club, he’s scored a massive 11 goals, ripping apart other sides in the top-flight.

If Wenger can develop that talent, he is only 19 years old after all, then he could have a devastating finisher on his hands that can finish chances from the creative force that is the Gunners’ frontline.
