According to reports in the Mail on Sunday, Arsenal are ready to launch a £45m bid for Monaco winger Thomas Lemar, in a deal that could be worth £50m.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Gunners are determined to make a statement in the summer transfer window in order to ensure that they are Premier League title contenders next season, and they are ready to add Lemar to the signing of Lyon striker Alexandre Lacazette.

The Mail on Sunday says that the north London outfit have already had bids of £30m and £40m rejected for the impressive 21-year-old winger, and now they are ready to make an offer of an initial £45m, that could rise to £50m with add-ons, such is their determination to land the France international.

How did Lemar do last season?

He was brilliant.

While Kylian Mbappe got many of the plaudits, the form of his attacking teammate was another one of the main reasons that Monaco won the Ligue 1 title and reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.

The winger scored 14 goals and provided a further 17 assists in 51 appearances in all competitions for the French side, and he made a huge impact from the left wing.

Would he be a good signing for Arsenal?

He certainly would be.

Arsene Wenger is keen to strengthen his team’s attacking options to ensure that they will compete for the Premier League title next season, as well as having a good crack at winning the Europa League, and adding an exciting talent like Lemar to the squad would certainly do that.

Despite his tender years, he has plenty of experience in Ligue 1, in European competition and now five caps for France, and he could prove to be a brilliant signing.

Is he worth £50m?

It’s difficult to say.

Of course, he shouldn’t be worth that fee considering he has played just two seasons for Monaco, but in the current era of outrageous transfer prices it is probably a fair price, and it could prove to be a great investment.

What’s the verdict, then?

Well, Arsenal seem determined to get a deal for Lemar done this summer and their latest offer could be too good for Monaco to turn down.
