Arsenal have become the bookies' favourites to sign Everton midfielder Ross Barkley, according to The Express.

What's the word?

The future of the England midfielder remains uncertain, but the clock is ticking.

Everton manager Ronald Koeman told the media numerous times during last season that Barkley risks being sold this summer if he does not sign a new contract.

There does not seem to be any indication that the midfielder will pen fresh terms, despite having just one year left on his current deal.

Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily linked to Barkley in the transfer gossip pages, but The Express recently reported that Arsenal's odds of getting the 23-year-old have improved.

Is Barkley right for Arsenal?

There is no denying that he has talent, and he could provide some strength and grit that the Gunners sometimes lack in midfield.

However, Barkley has struggled to perform consistently and questions still hang over his head about whether or not he can fulfil his potential.

Last season, the midfielder made 35 Premier League appearances, scoring five goals and creating eight assists.

In May, The Telegraph reported that Everton want £50m for their homegrown player, and even though the prices in the market have inflated, Barkley does not warrant that valuation.

With less than 12 months left on his contract, Arsenal would be foolish to fall to Everton's demands.

The Toffees may need to lower their asking price otherwise they risk pocketing zero when the midfielder's deal expires next summer.
