In Focus: Barkley has potential but lots to prove at Chelsea

As reported by The Sun, Chelsea are planning a raid on Everton, as soon as the two sides conclude their match at Stamford Bridge on Sunday

What’s the story?

Having already made big money signings in the form of Alvaro Morata, Antonio Rudiger and Tiemoue Bakayoko, Chelsea are heading into the last week of the transfer window in a strong position.

However, they haven’t completed their business quite yet.

The Sun report the Blues are set to launch a £30m bid for Everton talent Ross Barkley, as soon as the two sides conclude their match at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The paper reckon Antonio Conte is keen to add an English core to the dressing room and as identified Barkley as having the quality to add something to his squad.

Ready for Chelsea?

Last season the attacking midfielder scored five goals and provided a further nine assists in 36 Premier League appearances for the Toffees as they secured a spot in the Europa League, but he once again failed to show the consistency he would need to be a regular effective presence for a top four side.

It’s Barkley’s potential that his true value lies, with many reckoning he has the ability to grow into a very fine player with the right coaching, environment and players around him.

However, with the talent already plentiful at Stamford Bridge, he could find it tough to make a first-team impact and if he doesn’t get the  game time, then he’s never going to establish himself as that elite Premier League talent.

Can he prove he has what it takes to make it at the English champions?
