Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic is worried that his proposed transfer to Manchester United could collapse if Romelu Lukaku moves to Old Trafford, according to the Daily Mail.
It seemed as though a deal was close to completion with regards to Matic’s move to the North-West club.
Last month, the Daily Mail claimed that the midfielder was keen on signing for the Red Devils due to Chelsea’s interest in Tiemoue Bakayoko from Monaco.
Matic played under United manager Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge, and despite a tricky spell between the pair, it seemed as though a reunion was on the cards.
However, a spanner has been thrown into the works after United swooped under Chelsea’s noses to snatch Everton striker Lukaku.
On Thursday, numerous British newspapers claimed that the Red Devils were closing in on a £75m swoop, but now Sky Sports claim that Everton are waiting on the Premier League giants to meet their price, which could rise to £90m.
If the Belgian does move to Old Trafford, Matic is reportedly worried that Chelsea will either refuse to sell him or delay the transfer.
The lack of activity at Stamford Bridge has led to rumours that manager Antonio Conte is frustrated.
In this case, if the Blues miss out on a top target (Lukaku) to United then it would be understandable to put the Matic negotiations on hold.
Allowing a first-team player to join a direct rival is risky at the best of times, but you do not want to do that when said club already has the upper hand.
If Bakayoko comes through the door, then Matic’s game time is likely to be limited at Chelsea, so if the English champions can get a substantial fee for him then it is good business.
The Blues should not deny Matic his move purely because they are frustrated with the Lukaku situation, but they should wait until they have some significant signings of their own.
