In Focus: Chelsea lead race to sign Monaco star; he is ideal Kante partner

According to reports in the Daily Mail, Chelsea are leading the chase to sign Monaco midfielder Timeoue Bakayoko despite facing heavy competition from a number of clubs.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the 22-year-old is expected to leave the Ligue 1 leaders this summer following an impressive season and Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Juventus are all said to have tracked the France international.

However, Antonio Conte’s men are the favourites to sign the Frenchman with the Italian keen for him to provide competition for Nemanja Matic and N’Golo Kante in the middle of the park for the Premier League leaders.

How good has Bakayoko been this season?

He has been excellent.

The midfielder has shown the impact he can have at both ends of the pitch by scoring two goals in 28 Ligue 1 appearances as well as making 49 appearances and 49 clearances.

He also scored the crucial goal for his team as they knocked Manchester City out of the Champions League earlier this year.

What would he bring to Chelsea?

He’s quick and he’s strong and he would add some power to the central midfield alongside Matic and Kante.

He also has great vision too and therefore has the ability to pick out a forward pass, and the likeness to former Monaco midfielder and current Premier League star Yaya Toure is there for all to see.

What’s the verdict, then?

If Chelsea could beat the likes of Bayern Munich, Juventus and Manchester City to the signing of the 22-year-old it would certainly be a statement of intent, and he certainly has the potential to be a key first team player for the Blues for a number of years.
