As reported by The Telegraph, Manchester United are on the hunt for Eric Dier this summer with Mourinho wanting him in place at Old Trafford by the start of the new season.

What's the story?

After making their first signing, Victor Lindelof, last week, Manchester United don't appear to be slowing down in their pursuit of players this summer.

The Telegraph reckon Mourinho is hoping to land 23-year-old Dier, who he sees as a long-term Michael Carrick replacement.

However, Tottenham want £50m for the England international and the paper reckon that's beyond United's current valuation of the midfielder.

Is he the missing piece Mourinho has been looking for in midfield?

Midfielder or defender?

Dier played the majority of his season at White Hart Lane last term in the centre of defence which makes Mourinho's reported belief that he's the future of the Man United midfield very curious indeed.

There's no doubting Dier is also adept in the middle of the park, it's arguably his best position, but after 29 appearances anchoring the Spurs defence, it may take some time for him get up to speed in the Old Trafford midfield.

At just 23 he has plenty of long-term potential and with Carrick not getting any younger, he does appear to be an adequate replacement. He has the defensive chops and excellent passing ability, the kind of calming presence that could be huge for United.

At the reported £50m, he doesn't come cheap but if Mourinho has the future in mind on this deal, it could prove worth it in the end.
