Arsenal legend Robert Pires has told Bwin that Manchester United could sign Monaco star Fabinho in January.

What's the word?

In the summer, Fabinho was one of the players linked to Old Trafford during Jose Mourinho's hunt for a defensive midfielder.

In the end, the Red Devils brought in Nemanja Matic from Chelsea, where the Serbian played under Mourinho during the Portuguese coach's time at Stamford Bridge.

Despite this, during an interview with Bwin, former Arsenal midfielder Pires claimed that a potential deal may not be dead.

"I think this could happen in January, or next summer."

Do United need Fabinho?

Due to the arrival of Matic, it would seem strange to bring in a new defensive midfielder midway through the season.

However, Fabinho can also play at right-back, which is an area that United could do with boosting.

As it stands, Antonio Valencia is first choice in that position and he deserves to be given his seamless transition from winger to full-back.

The Ecuadorian has started all of United's 10 Premier League games, contributing with a goal in the process.

However, at the age of 32, Valencia may eventually need to share the load and Fabinho is certainly a decent option.

The 24-year-old Brazilian has started 10 Ligue 1 matches this season and all three of Monaco's Champions League fixtures.
