In Focus: Gibson could be the latest teenager to make a splash at Celtic

As reported by The Liverpool Echo, Celtic are one of a number of clubs chasing young Newcastle United starlet Lewis Gibson this summer.

What’s the story?

The Hoops are always on the look out for young talent to come in and compete for first team places in the Scottish Premiership, with Brendan Rodgers playing a number of teenagers throughout their incredible unbeaten season.

The latest of those could be 16 year old Lewis Gibson. The left-back, who turns 17 in the summer, is being chased by a number of top clubs, Celtic among them, say The Liverpool Echo.

The Hoops face significant competition from the likes of Everton with other clubs like Man United, Man City and Arsenal also showing an interest in his potential say the paper.

Could he be the latest teenager to make a splash at the Hoops?

Who is he?

Part of the England U17s side currently at the European Championships in Croatia, Gibson is seen as one of England’s brightest prospects, becoming a regular for Newcastle’s U18 side since making his debut at that level at the age of just 15.

His form has been good enough for him to be included in the higher age group this season, also featuring for Peter Bardley’s U23s team.

Celtic have played 14 players aged 21 or under this term, Rodgers always having his eye on young players he believes could be good enough for first team football.

A move for Gibson would just represent the latest part of philosophy and for the player, working with one of the top coaches around could be fantastic for his development – just look at the progress of the likes of Moussa Dembele this season, a player who moved to the club when he was still a teenager himself.
