According to reports in The Mirror, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will sign a new two-year deal to stay with the club even if they lose the FA Cup final against Chelsea on Saturday.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the French manager has come under increased scrutiny from supporters this season following a number of below-par performances in the Premier League and yet more failure in the Champions League.

A fifth-place finish in the top flight means that the Gunners’ run of 20 successive campaigns in Europe’s elite competition will come to an end as they will participate in the Europe League instead.

Despite the increasing pressure to sack Wenger amid doubts over the future of key men like Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, the board are ready to keep him as part of a behind-the-scenes re-shuffle.

What will that include?

The board are keen to reward Wenger for the loyalty that he has shown over the past 20 years and as such they won’t be appointing a director of football that could undermine the 67-year-old.

However, there will be a role for someone to oversee contracts, logistics and bringing together medical information.

Is it the right decision by the board?

It’s difficult to say.

While there is no doubt that Wenger has been a great servant over the years, the fact the Gunners have been declining in recent years and finished outside of the top four this season is a huge concern, with the players seemingly not playing for the Frenchman at times.

Will Arsenal fans be happy?

It really is a decision that has divided the supporters with many demanding change in order to progress, while others believe it could be a case of being careful what you wish for if they make a change that doesn’t work out as Manchester United did when they replaced Sir Alex Ferguson with David Moyes.

What’s the verdict, then?

Well, in some ways it could be a good decision for Arsenal to keep Wenger but he simply has to get things rights next season otherwise the fans will get on his back from the very start of the campaign.
