As reported by The Daily Mirror, Arsenal are targeting an English Premier League midfielder that could really add a different dimension to their set-up next season; Everton’s Idrissa Gueye.
27 year old Gueye is having a wonderful season at Everton, one of the stand outs in the entire division over the last 8 months.
That’s alerted Arsene Wenger and Arsenal say The Mirror, who reckon that the Gunners are looking for more defensive minded players to compliment the creativity they already possess.
However with other European clubs like Sevilla, Valencia and RB Leipzig on his trail, they face a battle to land a man who could turn around their fortunes in the middle of the park, according to the report.
Since joining from Aston Villa last summer, the Senegalese international has proved to be one of the signings of the season, helping Everton to push for European qualification places.
His combative physical style has been likened to Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante, another energetic performer who has taken the division by storm.
With excellent tackling and ball interception ability, his role as a midfield spoiler is arguably exactly what Arsenal are missing in the middle of the park with their men often looking weak and ineffectual in terms of winning the ball back from the opposition.
Their faltering midfield is a key reason why their season has gone off the rails and if Arsene Wenger stays on again next season, it’s likely to be the area of the team that sees the most investment.
A move for Idrissa Gueye could solve at least part of the problem.
