Real Madrid have placed Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane as their back-up target if they fail to land Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez, according to Don Balon.

What's the word?

The Spanish giants are believed to be keen on adding to their attacking department in January due to Karim Benzema's injury blow.

Sanchez is eligible to speak to other clubs in the winter window as his Arsenal deal is due to expire at the end of the season.

Don Balon reports that Kane is their second choice, but Los Blancos are considering the striker as a long-term replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, so are likely to wait for the summer to make a move.

The report adds that the England international has "fallen in love" with the Madrid boss and club president Florentino Perez.

Is this a realistic option for Kane?

The Tottenham forward is arguably one of the best strikers in the Premier League and given his rise over the last few years, it would be no surprise if the European big boys were keeping tabs on him.

Kane is a back-to-back Golden Boot winner and has established himself as a key player in Mauricio Pochettino's team at the age of 24.

It is difficult for any player to turn down the advances of Madrid, and given how ex-Spurs star Gareth Bale has succeeded at the Bernabeu, Kane would be forgiven for envisaging a similar career move.

A lot could depend on how the season pans out, and if the North London outfit end the campaign with silverware.

Tottenham have fallen short in the title race in the past two seasons and have not won a trophy since the League Cup in 2007-08.

There is no denying that Kane is fully committed to Spurs, but there is only so long that a player of his calibre can wait for silverware.
