As reported by The Evening Standard, Tottenham Hotspur are considering making an approach for Mateo Kovacic this summer.
Spurs are in a strong position this summer and any moves in the transfer market will likely be slight tweaks to Mauricio Pochettino’s team rather than wholesale changes.
Still, when opportunities become available to sign elite players, it’s something the club should strongly consider.
The Evening Standard say the club have been made aware of Mateo Kovacic’s availability with the midfielder having failed to convince Zinedine Zidane that his future lies in Madrid.
However, it could be a struggle to do the deal, with the paper saying the midfielder’s wage demands could be a potential stumbling block.
Kovacic is a classy midfielder who would bring real technical ability to the middle of the park at Wembley Stadium should he sign. With a 92% pass completion rate in La Liga last season across 27 appearances, it’s clear that if he joins he’d bring real consistency to the table too.
With the ability to bring the ball into the final third, he could be the kind of playmaking talent that Spurs could do with to complement the physicality of Victor Wanyama. While Pochettino’s side have plenty about them in the final third, adding more creative depth deeper in the midfield could really add a different dimension to their play.
All the evidence points him to being an elite acquisition if they can get the deal done. Rated at £21.25m by Transfermarkt and with Real Madrid reportedly looking to sell, he seems to be a viable option.
