According to reports in The Independent, Manchester City look to be closing in on the signing of Tottenham Hotspur defender Kyle Walker.

What’s the word, then?

Well, City manager Pep Guardiola is seemingly keen to get his transfer business done early having completed the £43m signing of Bernardo Silva from Monaco on Friday, and now he wants to complete deals for the Portugal international’s teammate Benjamin Mendy, as well as Walker.

With Gael Clichy, Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna all leaving the Etihad already this summer, Guardiola knows he needs to bring in some full-backs and the Tottenham star is his first choice right-back target.

Is the move likely to happen?

It might well do, yes.

Walker may have felt that he has done all he can at Spurs as they once again missed out on the Premier League title and he may believe that he has more chance of winning titles if he moves to Man City.

The England international’s future has been brought into further doubt in recent weeks when Kieran Trippier was preferred in the FA Cup semi-final defeat to Chelsea and the final ever north London derby against Arsenal at White Hart Lane.

In addition, Spurs star Danny Rose suggested in an interview on BBC Radio 5 Live on Friday that some of his teammates ‘might fancy a change’ this summer.

Would he be a good signing?

He certainly would be, yes.

The 26-year-old has proven over the last couple of years that he is one of the best right-backs in the Premier League, and he could add another attacking dimension to the City side that an ageing Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna struggled to do this season.

How much is he going to cost?

It has been reported that Walker could cost £40m and it could be a good deal for all of the parties involved.

Tottenham will feel that they have a ready-made replacement in Trippier and will have extra funds to give Mauricio Pochettino over the summer.

What’s the verdict, then?

Well, the signs all suggest that Walker is going to leave the club for City this summer, and he can make real progress in his career under Pep Guardiola as the club look to become title contenders again.
