In Focus: Leeds United deal for free agent Vurnon Anita is a no-brainer

According to reports in The Sun, Leeds United are looking to sign midfielder Vurnon Anita after he was released by Newcastle United last month.

What’s the word, then?

Well, new Whites boss Thomas Christiansen is keen to bolster his squad this summer as they look to mount a Championship promotion push next season, and The Sun says the Yorkshire outfit are in negotiations with the free agent about a move to Elland Road.

The Magpies decided not to extend the 28-year-old’s contract at St James’ Park despite the fact that he helped them make an immediate return to the Premier League, and now the Dutchman is looking for a new challenge following five up-and-down seasons on Tyneside.

How did he do last season?

He did pretty well, actually.

The versatile 28-year-old played 31 times as Newcastle won the Championship title on the final day of the campaign, and he was one of Rafa Benitez’s most experienced and dependable players.

However, it clearly wasn’t enough to convince the Spaniard that he deserved a new contract and to feature for the club in the top flight again.

Why was he released?

It’s difficult to say but after five years with the club and perhaps having not lived up to expectations following his move from Ajax, Benitez maybe felt that it was time for a fresh start for both the club, and the player.

Would he be a good signing for Leeds?

He certainly could be, and it is a bit of a no-brainer considering he is available on a free.

The 28-year-old has a wealth of experience having featured for Ajax, the Netherlands and Newcastle in the Premier League and the Championship, and the fact that he was won promotion from this notoriously difficult division in a huge plus point.

Anita’s preferred position is as a holding midfielder but the fact that he can also fill in at full-back make him a useful option to have in the squad, and he could be a hugely influential figure next season if he signs on at Elland Road.

What’s the verdict, then?

Well, Leeds are looking to build on their impressive campaign last time out and adding players with the experience of Anita will help them do that.

Considering he is available for nothing, they would be mad not to get a deal sewn up as soon as possible.
