According to reports in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United are targeting a move for Hamburg striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga, who is rated at £1.8m according to Transfermarkt, and they could step up their interest in him following the departure of Marcus Antonsson on a season-long loan deal to Blackburn Rovers.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Yorkshire Evening Post says that the Hamburg centre-forward has been on the radar of the Yorkshire outfit throughout the summer transfer window, and that they want to bring him to the Championship after he was told that he is surplus to requirements with the Bundesliga outfit.

However, the Yorkshire Evening Post says that the 25-year-old, who has two years remaining on his contract, is one of the German side’s highest earners and that could prove to be an obstacle in a potential move to Elland Road.

The report adds that Hamburg would be willing to compensate his wages in order to get him off of their books, though.

How did Lasogga do last season?

The striker often found himself on the substitutes’ bench and even though he made 20 Bundesliga appearances, he only spent a total of 539 minutes on the pitch and found the net on only one occasion.

He was certainly a little more successful in the previous campaign having netted eight goals and provided a further three assists in 30 German top flight matches, which showed the potential he has as a centre-forward.

Would he be a good signing for Leeds?

He probably would be, yes.

The 25-year-old looks to have the physical nature to be a success in the Championship, while he also comes with some great pedigree considering he has scored four goals in 11 caps for the Germany national team.

In addition, he scored 13 goals in just 20 Bundesliga appearances for Hamburg in the 2013/14 season and while injuries have slightly hampered him since then, he certainly still has something to offer.

Leeds need that extra competition up top too with only Caleb Ekuban really providing Chris Wood with any competition following Antonsson’s exit to Blackburn and with the fact that Souleymane Doukara also looks to be on his way out after not featuring the club’s opening two matches of the campaign.

What’s the verdict, then?

Well, Leeds need another striker option and signing Lasogga would certainly be something of a coup as they look to secure a Premier League return.
