According to reports in The Times, Liverpool may have to spend £110m if they want to sign two of Jurgen Klopp’s top transfer targets this summer.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Reds manager Jurgen Klopp is understood to have made RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita and Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk is priority additions, but they certainly won’t come on the cheap.

A breakthrough campaign for Keita, who helped his side qualify for the group stages of the Champions League as they finished runners-up to Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, means that he is one of the most highly-rated players in European football right now, and his side will demand a huge fee to prise him away.

Meanwhile, Van Dijk is also a target for Chelsea and Manchester United and with Saints said to be asking for at least £50m for the Dutchman, it could prove to be an expensive summer for the Merseyside outfit.

Would they be willing to pay those fees

Considering their current transfer record is the £35m they spent on Andy Carroll in 2011, you may think not.

But fees have certainly evolved since then and Jurgen Klopp will be telling his board that they must start to pay the asking prices of players if they want to progress and become real contenders in both the Premier League and Champions League.

Are they worth the money?

Of course, £110m is a lot of money but the Reds would certainly be getting two players that could make a real difference over the next few years.

Van Dijk has shown what a brilliant centre-back he is over the course of the past couple of seasons and he would bring leadership and a real quality to a Liverpool backline that has struggled in recent campaigns.

Meanwhile, Keita would bring a real energy to the middle of the park and having scored eight goals and provided a further eight assists in the Bundesliga last term, he comes with real pedigree too.

What’s the verdict, then?

Well, while Liverpool are ambitious they will face a real fight to firstly prise Keita away from RB Leipzig as they look to keep their squad together for a Champions League campaign, while they could easily be outbid by the likes of Chelsea and United for Van Dijk.
