In Focus: Man United confident of sealing £90m double deal; move makes sense

According to separate reports in The Mirror, Manchester United are confident of sealing a £90m double move for Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos and Benfica centre-back Victor Lindelof this summer.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho is keen to strengthen his defensive options this summer and he is said to be increasingly convinced that he can bring in two of the most highly-rated young centre-backs in Europe.

The Portuguese boss has only had Eric Bailly as a senior fit centre-back in recent games with Marcos Rojo, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones all ruled out because of injury, meaning that Daley Blind has once again filled in at the heart of the defence.

He has long been linked with a move for both Lindelof and Marquinhos and he would be getting two of the best young defenders in Europe if he can prise them away from their current sides.

Can they prise both away?

They certainly can.

United tried to sign Lindelof during the January transfer window but the move failed to materialise.
Benfica president Luis Felipe Vieira is holding out for £50m for the Sweden international but United believe they can get him for £40m.

It could be more difficult for them to bring Marquinhos to Old Trafford as PSG would like to keep the 22-year-old at the club, but he is said to be keen on challenging himself in England and a £50m offer could be enough to get the deal done.

What’s the verdict, then?

There’s no doubt that Mourinho will want to bring in at least one new centre-back this summer but whether he wants to bring in two when he has the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones – no matter what injury problems they may have had – in addition to Eric Bailly remains to be seen.

If he does get either – or both – it would certainly further strengthen the club’s backline.
