According to reports in The Mirror, Manchester United are willing to let Inter Milan have Matteo Darmian and Chris Smalling as part of a deal to bring £47m-rated Ivan Perisic to Old Trafford, but they have told the Serie A giants that they won’t be getting Anthony Martial.

What’s the word, then?

Well, one of Jose Mourinho’s top summer transfer targets is Perisic but reports in The Telegraph on Friday suggested that the Red Devils are unwilling to meet the price tag on the 28-year-old’s head, with Inter asking for Anthony Martial on loan.

However, The Mirror suggests that the Portuguese boss could be ready to offload Smalling and Darmian to the Serie A giants so as to reduce the cost of bringing the Croatia international to the Premier League, with Inter boss Luciano Spalletti ready to let him go.

The report adds that the former Roma manager could be particularly keen on Darmian, having shown an interest in Real Madrid right-back Danilo this summer.

How did Perisic do last season?

Following some eye-catching performances for his country at Euro 2016, the two-footed winger should have come into the previous campaign full of confidence.

However, Inter endured a tough start to the season under former boss Frank de Boer but things did improve, with Perisic ending the campaign having scored 11 goals and provided a further 12 assists in 42 appearances in all competitions.

Would he be a good signing for United?

He certainly looks as though he would be, yes.

The Red Devils need more quality and strength in depth and wide areas and the fact that Perisic can create, score goals and play on either flank make him an attractive option for Mourinho.

Should United let Smalling and Darmian go?

It’s difficult to say.

The arrival of Victor Lindelof from Benfica over the summer has pushed Smalling further down the pecking order and they could probably afford to lose him, but it might be a different story for Darmian.

United don’t exactly have loads of full-back options and the Italian is able to play at both right and left-back, with that versatility proving to be key last term during a long and tough campaign.

What’s the verdict, then?

Well, if United really don’t feel that Perisic is worth £47m then they may have to offer players in exchange to get the deal done, but they may regret losing a versatile player like Darmian and perhaps should just pay the asking price.
