According to reports in The Mirror, Manchester United winger Adnan Januzaj looks to be edging closer to the Old Trafford exit door after being told by Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho that he won’t be handed a squad number next season.
Well, despite making a huge impression in the United first team as an 18-year-old when David Moyes was in charge, the Belgian wide-man has struggled to make an impression since and endured a disappointing season-long loan spell at Sunderland last term.
Now the club are ready to cash in on the £12m-rated 22-year-old – who is attracting interest from La Liga outfit Real Sociedad – and the Red Devils are ready to accelerate his exit by not giving him a squad number ahead of the new campaign, according to The Mirror.
Having been left out of the squad that flew out to America on Sunday as part of the club’s pre-season preparations, the Belgium international’s future looks bleak.
Janzuaj made 25 Premier League appearances last season in what was a hugely difficult campaign for the Black Cats, but he couldn’t help keep them in the top flight as he failed to score a goal, although he did provide three assists.
It was another disappointing spell for the Belgian after he made just 12 outings in all competitions during a similar loan with Borussia Dortmund in the previous campaign.
He was recalled halfway through that season because of question marks over his attitude, according to The Mirror.
It doesn’t look like it.
Mourinho has obviously decided that he doesn’t fancy the winger and it’s no surprise considering his underwhelming performances out on loan in recent seasons.
The Portuguese manager may feel that Janzuaj is too lightweight, incosistent and not able to do a job defensively as a wide-man – something the Red Devils boss demands.
Well, despite the potential he showed all of those years ago, it looks to be the end of the road for Januzaj at Manchester United and it will come as little surprise to many.
