According to reports on Belgian website Het Belang van Limburg, via Sport Witness, Manchester United would have to pay a maximum of £31.3m if they want to sign Anderlecht midfielder Leander Dendoncker this summer.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Sun says that Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho is determined to add some steel to his midfield this summer and despite being on the verge of signing Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic, he could now look to add Dendoncker to his squad as well, particularly with Marouane Fellaini being heavily linked with a move to Galatasaray.

Sport Witness reported that a United scout was present for Anderlecht’s Belgian Pro League fixture against Antwerp on Friday night and that the 22-year-old was the likely name that was being watched following the departure of Youri Tielemans to Monaco earlier this summer, despite the fact that they had previously stated that they wanted him to stay.

However, Anderlecht’s sport manager Herman Van Holsbeeck has now come out and confirmed that a price of between €25m (approximately £22.4m) and €35m (approximately £31.3m) would be needed to prise the midfielder away from the Belgian giants.

What did he say?

Speaking to Het Belang van Limburg, via Sport Witness, the 62-year-old said: "We want to cherish him, but if a club is willing to pay between €25- €35m, we have a problem."

How well did Dendocker do last season?

The defensive midfielder has become a key player for Anderlecht during the course of the last three seasons and he made 57 appearances in all competitions last term, scoring six goals.

He has shown how highly-rated he is by captaining the side on occasions, while he is comfortable in possession as well as being a protective shield for his defence.

Would he be a good signing for United?

He certainly would be.

The Belgian has impressed in the early years of his career and having featured for Anderlecht in Europe – including against Manchester United last season – he looks ready to make the step up to the Premier League.

The Red Devils needed a new midfielder as a priority this summer with Michael Carrick getting no younger despite signing a new one-year deal, and the potential exit of Fellaini could mean that Dendoncker is an essential addition at Old Trafford even if a deal for Matic goes through.
