According to the Leicester Mercury, Manchester United have been dealt a blow after reported target Kasper Schmeichel said that he is “fully committed” to the Foxes, with the Red Devils potentially interested in the goalkeeper, who is worth at least £30m according to reports in The Mirror earlier this month.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Leicester Mercury says that the goalkeeper has been linked with a move to United if they sell David De Gea to Real Madrid this summer.

The Denmark international added further fuel to the fire after recently changing agents, according to the Leicester Mercury, but he has come out and answered the speculation about his future after the 2015/16 Premier League champions signed Eldin Jakupovic from Hull City earlier this week.

What did Schmeichel say, then?

Speaking about his future and the addition of Jakupovic, the 30-year-old told the Leicester Mercury: "I am a Leicester player until someone tells me otherwise and until then I am fully committed to this club.

"Competition has always been there and has to be there otherwise or we could start becoming complacent throughout the whole squad if there isn’t competition for places.

"Yes [I welcome the challenge]. What else am I going to do?"

How good was Schmeichel last season?

After playing a huge role in helping Leicester win a historical Premier League title in the 2015/16 campaign, it was always going to be difficult to live up to that story last term, and it proved to be the case.

That said, Schmeichel was one of the few Foxes players that was close to matching his level of performance from the previous campaign, and he kept eight clean sheets in 30 top flight appearances, conceding 47 goals and making an average of 3.43 saves per game.

Would he be a good signing for United?

If De Gea goes and United are looking for an experienced stopper who has experience of winning the Premier League and competing in Europe, then there aren’t many better options around than Schmeichel.

While he would always be compared to his dad if he did move to Old Trafford due to the history between Peter and the Red Devils, Kasper has proved that he has the qualities to perform at the very highest level, while he also captained Leicester towards the end of last season.

His reaction saves are impressive, he pulls off some brilliant stops and he is also comfortable with the ball at his feet, which is important for a modern day goalkeeper.
