According to reports in the Daily Mail, Manchester United are in a good position to sign Bayern Munich midfielder Renato Sanches this summer, but they may have to settle for a loan deal.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Bundesliga giants look set to loan the 19-year-old following a tough first season in Germany having joined the club from Benfica last summer, and United are likely to be one of the frontrunners for his signature, according to the Daily Mail.

The Daily Mail adds that had Jose Mourinho been appointed as the new Red Devils boss sooner than he was last year, then he probably would have got Sanches ahead of Bayern, who completed an initial £27.5m move before Euro 2016, where the midfielder shone for winners Portugal.

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge hinted that the Portuguese starlet will be allowed to leave the club this summer earlier this week, and they may even be prepared to sell him on a permanent deal for €48 (approximately £43m), according to Tuttomercatoweb.

What did he say?

Speaking on Sanches, the 61-year-old said: “He is a player who needs to play regularly, so if we feel he is not going to get enough game time, then we will loan him out, or maybe even sell him.”

Despite Rummenigge’s comments, it would be difficult to see Bayern selling Sanches just one year after bringing the promising star to the Allianz Arena, but if their valuation is met in a summer where transfer prices are going crazy then it could be a different story.

How did Sanches do last season?

He struggled.

Hopes would have been high that he could have a major impact for the German giants following such an impressive Euro 2016 campaign, but it didn’t prove to be the case.

The midfielder made just 17 Bundesliga appearances across 615 minutes of league action, while he played a total of 903 minutes throughout the campaign, failing to register a goal or an assist from the centre of the park.

Would he be a good signing for United?

He certainly could be, yes.

United don’t have an abundance of options in central midfield ahead of what is going to be a tough campaign as they return to the group stages of the Champions League, and Sanches could bring some quality and energy in that position.

Mourinho would be confident that he could bring out the best in the 19-year-old, and if it was to be a loan deal, there would be little risk either.
