In Focus: Manchester United unlikely to sign Jordi Alba this summer

According to reports on ESPN, Manchester United are interested in a move for Barcelona and Spain left-back Jordi Alba, but a move could be difficult to complete.

What’s the word, then?

Well, according to ESPN, Alba’s future at the Camp Nou was thrown into doubt last season after he failed to get a regular run in the side under Luis Enrique, but the situation may now have changed after Enrique left the Spanish giants and was replaced by Ernesto Valverde.

Meanwhile, Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho is keen to sign a new first-choice left-back this summer after being unimpressed with Luke Shaw, and using the likes of Matteo Darmian, Marcos Rojo, Daley Blind and Ashley Young there last season.

However, United would face a battle to convince Alba to move to the Premier League seeing as he is likely to be back in favour and has a new boss that he will want to impress in pre-season.

How did Alba do last season?

Despite sometimes finding that Lucas Digne had been preferred at left-back – especially in the latter stages of the Champions League – the 28-year-old still made 39 appearances in all competitions for the La Liga outfit.

He scored one goal and provided six assists in those outings, and showed that he can still get up and down the pitch – something that will have impressed Mourinho.

Would he be a good signing?

He certainly would be.

The Spain international has all of the attributes to be a success in the Premier League, but perhaps may have to work a little more on the defensive side of his game.

Do United need a new left-back?

If Mourinho doesn’t fancy Shaw and it isn’t willing to give him an opportunity, then they really do.

The likes of Matteo Darmian and Ashley Young can’t continue to play out of position and Marcos Rojo is probably more comfortable at centre-back then he is as a full-back.

Whether United go for another left-back if they can’t sign Alba remains to be seen, but the Portuguese boss will surely realise that it could be a weakness in their bid to win the Premier League title next season.

What’s the verdict, then?

Well, a move for Alba looks unlikely unless he is told he is surplus to requirements by Valverde, but it is a hint that United are looking to sign a new left-back this summer.
