As reported by The Scottish Sun, Celtic are interested in signing Southampton defender Martin Caceres this summer after he was told he doesn't have a future at St Mary's.

What's the story?

Caceres only signed for Southampton in January but has made just one appearance under Claude Puel and as they begin to focus on youth, his short-term contract will not be extended, according to The Scottish Sun.

The paper also say that the Hoops are very interested in signing him, to the extent that they are already holding talks with the 30-year-old. However, they do face competition from Premier League clubs such as Leicester City and Watford also interested.

Is he the answer to add real quality to the Celtic backline?

Experienced pro

While he may have only made one appearance for Southampton, Caceres has lots of experience at the top level of football having made over 100 appearances for Juventus in Serie A and over 100 appearances in Spanish football for Sevilla, Barcelona and Recreativo.

Having also gained 68 caps for his country, playing in two World Cups and multiple Copa Americas, it's clear he has experience that would greatly enhance the Hoops squad.

Brendan Rodgers is hoping to make significant progress in Europe and bringing in an experienced hand could be a big step towards that, especially when you consider he has dozens of appearances in UEFA competition.

On a reported free transfer, this feels like a no-brainer for Celtic if they can compete with English Premier League wages and get the deal done.
