In Focus: Matic could be the missing piece of the Mourinho puzzle

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Jose Mourinho is targeting a big summer reunion in the upcoming transfer window with a move for Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic.

What’s the story?

Mourinho is on the hunt for talent he believes can turn United into title challengers in the English Premier League next season and where better to cast his eye than former club and recently crowned champions Chelsea?

The Manchester Evening News reckon a holding midfielder is at the top of his shopping list this summer to complement the likes of Paul Pogba in the heart of the United midfield and Nemanja Matic is his top pick.

Is he worth spending a good chunk of the Red Devils’ budget?

Worth the cash?

Transfermarkt currently value the 28 year old at £30m which, while well within United’s budget, represents a fair chunk of Jose Mourinho’s spending power this summer.

Nevertheless, he could well be worth it considering the vital role he’s played in delivering the title for Antonio Conte in his first season as Chelsea boss.

Matic has made 35 appearances in the Premier League so far this season, starting 30 of those and missing just two matches. You don’t become a regular at Stamford Bridge without possessing real quality.

Midfield steel and defensive prowess, which Matic has plenty of, is something United have arguably lacked this season and if Mourinho can tempt him north to Manchester then the Serbian international could be the missing piece in the Portuguese’s midfield puzzle at Old Trafford.
