According to reports in The Sun, Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is ready to make a £10m bid for Guingamp starlet Marcos Coco this summer.

What’s the word, then?

Well, if the Magpies seal an instant return to the Premier League – which is looking likely despite the fact that they were beaten by Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday – Benitez will look to strengthen his squad to ensure that they aren’t relegation candidates next term.

The Spaniard tried to bring the 20-year-old to St James’ Park last summer, but he decided to stay at the Ligue 1 outfit.

Newcastle could face competition from Southampton and Stoke City though, who are also said to be interested in Coco.

How has he done this season?

He has done well.

The pacey winger, who is also able to play at full-back, has scored four goals and provided two assists for his teammates this season in 24 Ligue 1 appearances.

Where would he fit in at Newcastle?

The Frenchman usually plays on the right wing, but with Matt Ritchie currently holding that position and being one of the individuals that is likely to make the step up to the Premier League under Rafa Benitez, he could be deployed on the left-hand side.

Yoan Gouffran has often been the preferred choice there this term, but the Magpies boss will be keen to get an upgrade on the 30-year-old this summer.

Will they win the race for his signature?

It’s hard to say.

Stoke are said to be long-term admirers of the 20-year-old while Claude Puel is said to know the player well from his time managing Nice.

The chance to be a first team regular could swing it in United’s favour, though.
