According to reports on talkSPORT, Newcastle United have reignited their interest in Angers winger Nicolas Pepe ahead of a summer move.
What’s the word, then?
Well, Magpies manager Rafa Benitez is keen to significantly strengthen his squad this summer following their immediate return to the Premier League, and he has already made his first addition after signing Christian Atsu on a permanent deal from Chelsea following a successful loan spell.
However, the Spanish boss is still keen to bring in another wide man and he is set to make another move for Pepe having failed to bring him to St James’ Park during the January transfer window.
How has he done this season?
The 21-year-old helped Angers to a mid-table finish in Ligue 1 with some impressive performances, and he ended the season with three goals and one assist from 38 appearances in all competitions.
The French side will face Paris Saint-Germain in the final of the Coupe de France this weekend and no decision is expected on his future until after that fixture, with Monaco, Lyon and Marseille all said to be interested in the forward.
Would he be a good signing for Newcastle?
It’s difficult to say.
While he clearly has some potential, his stats don’t suggest that he would make a huge impact in the Premier League.
He only played the full 90 minutes on one occasion for Angers in Ligue 1 this season and perhaps that suggests that he isn’t quite as consistent as he should be just yet.
It may also show that he doesn’t have the stamina to play for a whole match, and that could be a big disadvantage in England where the game can be so intense at times.
What’s the verdict, then?
Well, while Newcastle boss Benitez will want to strengthen in wide areas Pepe doesn’t seem to be an upgrade on Atsu, who also plays on the right wing, and it would be something of a risky signing.
With their Premier League status potentially on the line next season, it is perhaps a risk they shouldn’t take.
