As reported by The Daily Telegraph, Manchester United are ready to switch their player focus this summer with the chance of signing Nemanja Matic becoming remote.

What's the story?

It was reported last month that Matic was in Jose Mourinho's sights this summer but it seems any bid to sign him is now doomed to failure.

The Telegraph say that United snapping up Romelu Lukaku from under Chelsea's nose means that the Blues will be less eager to strengthen a potential rival next season.

However, the paper also say that the Red Devils are still pursuing Tottenham Hotspur's Eric Dier despite already having had a bid for the England international rejected.

The Telegraph reckon he could cost as much as £50m if they really want him to make the switch to Manchester. United could even double his wage, which the paper say is currently £75,000 per week.

The right player?

Dier played the majority of last season at White Hart Lane last term in the centre of defence which makes Mourinho’s reported belief that he’s the future of the Man United midfield very curious indeed.

There’s no doubting Dier is also adept in the middle of the park, it’s arguably his best position, but after 29 appearances anchoring the Spurs defence, it may take some time for him get up to speed in the Old Trafford midfield.

At just 23 he has plenty of long-term potential and with Carrick not getting any younger, he does appear to be an adequate replacement. He has the defensive chops and excellent passing ability, the kind of calming presence that could be huge for United.

At the reported £50m, he doesn’t come cheap but if Mourinho has the future in mind on this deal, it could prove worth it in the end.
