As reported by The Daily Mirror, Manchester United are set to secure the future of defender Phil Jones with a bumper new contract.
The Red Devils’ form at the start of the season has been in no small part due to the contribution from their defensive line, conceding just two goals in the English Premier League after eight matches, half the amount of the next most frugal team Manchester City.
One of the stand-outs has been Phil Jones and he’s set to be rewarded for his form with a lucrative new deal. That’s according to The Mirror, who say the club will offer the defender £150k-a-week to ensure he signs up beyond his current contract.
That deal has just 20 months left to run but United are set to put his earnings on the level of David Luiz at Chelsea and Vincent Kompany at City, according to the paper.
There’s no doubting that Phil Jones has had ups and downs at Manchester United since joining six years ago.
Last year was a frustrating one for him with injuries taking their toll, meaning he had to settle for just 18 Premier League appearances.
This season though he’s shown the kind of consistency that fans have been crying out for and has formed a solid partnership with Eric Bailly in the heart of the United defence.
Still just 25 years of age, he’s definitely worth a new deal at the club, especially as he’s yet to come into his peak years. Set to go past the 200 overall appearance mark for the Red Devils this season, he is already one of the most experienced players in the United team.
Perhaps most importantly he has the trust of Mourinho and as such could be a cornerstone in the team in the coming seasons, a period which could bring great success to the club.
