In Focus: Renato Sanches would add real depth to Chelsea midfield

As reported by Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, Chelsea hold an interest in signing Bayern Munich midfielder Renato Sanches this summer.

What’s the story?

Chelsea have already made a number of key first team signings this summer with the likes of Tiemoue Bakayoko, Alvaro Morata and Antonio Rudiger joining Antonio Conte’s title-winning squad.

However, it seems that the Blues boss is intent in adding even more depth to his midfield with a move for Renato Sanches this summer.

That’s according to Corriere dello Sport, who say that Conte asked for information on a potential transfer for the midfielder after Chelsea’s pre-season friendly with Bayern Munich last week.

However, there are possible hurdles to a deal according to the outlet, including the fact he is also coveted by Serie A giants AC Milan and the fact Bayern are only willing to let him go out on loan, considering he joined the German side for £31m just last summer.

What kind of player is he?

Sanches is a technically gifted central midfielder who offers a physical presence and an ability to calmly spread play from back to front, a genuine all-rounder.

Despite his big money move to Germany last year, he hasn’t been first pick at Bayern Munich, making the vast majority of his appearances from the substitutes bench.

However he is still just 19 years of age, so isn’t expected to be the finished product quite yet and for his young years, the fact he has 12 caps with the Portugal national team is impressive.

It’s clear he’s a talent and would be a real addition to the Chelsea squad next season, on loan or not, as Conte looks to bring in bodies to allow them to compete on multiple fronts.
