As reported by Sky Sports, David Moyes has found the man he hopes will replace Patrick Van Aanholt, who is on the brink of a move to Crystal Palace.

What's the story?

With left-back Van Aanholt reported to be on the verge of joining old boss Sam Allardyce at Crystal Palace, David Moyes badly needs an emergency replacement to fit in on the left side of Sunderland's defence.

Sky Sports reckon the man he's tracking is Bordeaux defender Diego Contento, hoping to take him on loan for the rest of the season.

The right replacement?

Diego Contento has a rich pedigree having spent his entire career at two of Europe's most iconic clubs. He learned his trade at Bayern Munich, coming through the youth teams before going on to make close to 70 appearances for the first team.

Often used as back-up in Germany, he eventually moved to Bordeaux to seek more regular first team football and has found it, a regular on the left hand side of the French side's defence.

That sounds like an attractive proposition to most Premier League teams, but especially true of Sunderland who not only need someone in to replace Van Aanholt, but someone who has the quality required to make a difference in their tough relegation battle ahead.

His experience at these big clubs on the continent would likely be invaluable to that cause.
